Proctor's Guide for Paper LPI Exams
Announce pre-registration to prevent fights over seats:
The number of candidates per exam session is limited by seating availability. If you are interested in having an exam in your area, please email lpi-proctors (at) linux.org.au
Each exam requires at least one proctor (and not a proctor responsible for any training of the entire group) and one other proctor or assistant proctor. See the Proctor page for a definition of proctors and how to be a proctor or assistant proctor.
Needed equipment:
- Sign for the door "LPI-Test in progress - Please do not disturb!"
- Known number of 101 (DEBs and RPMs), 102, 201 and 202 packs (check for completeness and candidate's notes)
- Pencils with _good_ erasers, or separate erasers
- Pencil sharpener
- Clock, unless installed in room
- Receipt book from Linux Australia
- Credit card facility if needed
Room:
- Clock
- Board to indicate start and end time (or a paper taped on the wall)
- Good air conditioning, light and air circulation. Ensure al settings are made prior to exam starting
- Ensure sound levels are acceptable for exam conditions
Preparations:
- Arrange tables (good: 80x80cm) in a grid
- Set clock
Procedure
- Put sign on the door.
- Seat one candidate per table first. Place them from front to back to ensure acceptable space between. [1]
- Make sure that everybody has their LPI-ID number, a photo-id and the exam fee at hand (Cash/Credit/money order).
- Check photo-id: photo and person; photo-id name and answer sheet name. Collect money.
- Write receipt for all candidates for your and their record.
- Ensure exam tables are empty apart from the attendees LPI ID numbers, pencils, erasers, and sharpeners. Handout any needed pencils and erasers.
- Ensure mobile phones and pagers are turned off, no talking, baseball caps off ;-)
- Make a desk map of all participant locations so that if people are doing multiple exams, you know where to put each exam.
- Explain the requirements for a certification (LPIC1=101+102).
- Announce that results will be e-mailed within 2-3 weeks to the address shown on their registration.
- Announce the duration of the exams, and starting, stop times.
- Hand out booklets. Read out initial spiel as provided with exams from LPI, including information about not writing on exam papers, returning _ALL_ components of the exam pack back to the pack (some exams have been made void by only half the working paper being returned). Anyone requiring the bathroom during the exams may raise their hand, and once the proctor is aware, the candidate may use the bathroom. Nothing should be taken out of the room - and the clock is not stopped for bathroom use. Candidates who complete the exam before the allotted time, should raise their hands, and the proctor should collect the exam and answer sheet - and allow the candidate to leave quietly. Ask if everybody agrees to a photo during the exam.
- Candidates may fill in their name etc.
- A reminder is made at 15, 10 and 2 minutes before the end of the exam.
- If a candidate wants to give feedback on questions, the proctor hands out a sheet of paper only after the candidate finished the exam. This sheet must be collected by the proctor right after the candidate put down his comments.
- When the time is up, all pencils down. Collect exams.
Mind [1] if candidates sit closely.
If an examinee is blind and needs assistance, the reader must sign an NDA and the exam must happen in a seperate room to other examinees. The reader may read each question as many times as required by the examinee, however under no circumstances must anything but what is written within the exam pack be said by the reader. An appropriate response to queries is "I am not permitted to help you, but I can repeat the question". A proctor is still required as well as the reader.
