Five years we conducted a review of our use of information technology and in particular the desktop operating system that we were using at the time. We decided to change the OS from Microsoft Windows and the office Suite from MS Office to Linux and Star Office and provide all staff and students with a username and password to logon to the system. User files being stored on a Linux server via NFS mounts to the /export/home/ directory on the desktop workstation. We currently have around 210 Linux desktops for staff and student use and a small number of machines that dual boot to Linux and Windows XP. The majority of use however is on Linux. If you are interested in finding out more information on our experience please feel free to contact me.

Currently working as a volunteer to assist primary and secondary level educators to gain a neutral perspective about IT support and services, ideally I would like to be part of a not-for-profit group in Queensland that makes Free and open source solutions a more accessible option for teachers and schools.
I'm Regional Director of Teen Challenge SA Inc-Murray Bridge (http://www.lm.net.au/~tcmb) a non-profit organisation which helps people with life-controlling problems. As part of my work for Teen Challenge I've set up training centres in Murray Bridge, Elizabeth and Waikerie (all using Linux). The Murray Bridge training centre is for community access where I teach basic computing, Internet, word processing etc on Linux for people on low incomes. Elizabeth and Waikerie training centres are for our residential drug rehabilitation students only. Click on my name for contact details and more info.

Located in regional SA. Working part-time at a primary school. Providing Moodle hosting and training to local schools. Working to raise a pool of talent locally through a LUG so lack of support for FOSS is never an issue. Promoting OSS for Windows desktops into Primary schools. Involved with lots of lists. Need to do more, but still feel an outsider to the education system, so not as active as I could be.

I'm the coordinator of Computerbank Victoria (http://vic.computerbank.org.au), we distribute donated computers, using free and open source software to disadvantaged individuals, and community groups in Victoria and overseas. Our work involves training/education, we run free end user Linux classes most Saturdays, and deliver both free and fee based training in a range of Linux topics. I'm into FOSS because it demonstrates a real sense of social justice and empowerment.

Director of Creative Contingencies (http://www.cc.com.au/) - keenly interested in Education and FOSS. We have ongoing work supporting the Victorian Information Technology Teachers Association (http://www.vitta.org.au/) and would like to help them help their members discover the benefits of open source alternatives. Donna is also the education spokesperson for Open Source Victoria. Working on research to match open source software to the learning domains of victoria's essential learning standards. FOSS-VELS-OSV

Network administrator at a high school in Sydney NSW. I am currently looking at compiling an out of the box solution for fellow, already overworked, systems/network administrators for managing and maintaining a large number of computers. The aim of this project would be to be able to use the solution to take maximise the benefits of upcoming government grants. To start with the focus will be on low cost portable laptops with the idea of being able to provide an affordable laptop program in less affluent school environments. I'm System Architect and Principle Engineer at Symstream Technologies (http://www.symstream.com). Responsible for designing and building high availability networking technologies for and supplying network and security expertise to the financial sector while drawing heavily on open source technologies to provide open and reliable solutions. I became interested in promoting FOSS in schools when my son enterred the Victorian school system and it became clear that IT was a poorly run Microsoft monoculture. I'm interested in promoting FOSS and its communities within schools and have a particular interest in LTSP (http://www.ltsp.org), linux-based IT infrastructure and understanding how to sell a whole-of-region FOSS solution for schools.
